Moving about Florence can be difficult at times due to places of uneven pavement, often occouring narrow or curbless side-walks, and the fact that it is quite common in Italy to find cars parked just about anywhere. However, a lot of buildings are keen to ensure that their structures and services are fully accessible to disabled persons. Wherever possible, Florence made its buildings and services accessible. Sometimes, however, this is not possible due to security or other restrictions. In these situations Florence will try to provide a service or access to a building in an alternative way to ensure equality of access for disabled people. For more information:

PUBLIC TRANSPORT SYSTEM


The city of Florence has recently implemented a version of buses that have coaches equipped by a special ramp to make boarding with a wheelchair more swift and easy. These particular busses run on the main city lines. To find more information please check with the municipal transport company ATAF at the phone number +39-0555650433. Unfortunately, special adapted taxis for travellers on a wheelchair are not available in Florence.

Trains:

In Florence there are three stations: Station of Rifredi, Station of Campo Marte and Central Station of Santa Maria Novella. The Italian railways net is well equipped to help people with disability. More than 150 Italian railway stations have a reception service for disabled travellers and about 900 Eurostar trains have coach for disables; note: this service must be booked at least 24 hours in advance. The Florence station of Santa Maria Novella is not equipped for the disabled.

Airports:

- Florence Airport Amerigo Vespucci: the airport staff takes great care to help those who may need assistance. These travellers are assisted during embarkation, accompanied on-board and awaited at arrival. Facilities for disabled passengers are available, such as wheel chairs, free medical and paramedical assistance, toilettes, telephone booths and parking spaces in addition to an embarking/disembarking elevator vehicle. An assistance request facility is located outside of the departure terminal.

- Pisa Airport Galileo Galilei: the Galileo Galilei airport staff takes great care to help those who may need assistance at the moment of the board thanks to special equipment. Wheelchair users can be boarded by means of special ramp equipment - movable lounge - with an elevating platform. The airport is equipped with special facilities for the disabled: reserved parking spaces, toilettes, telephone for the hearing impaired, ramps and lifts providing access to the services located on the first floor of the air terminal.

"VIVERE FIRENZE"

Vivere Firenze is a site that offers touristic route with additional information for disabled persons. It suggests four tourist routes:

- from Piazza della Repubblica to Piazza della Signoria
- from Piazza della Repubblica to Via del Giglio
- from Piazza della Repubblica to Piazza San Giovanni
- from Piazza della Repubblica to Piazza San Firenze

1. In this route you can admire wonders of Florence crossing Via dei Calzaiuoli and Via Calimala and at the and of these streets you will reach Piazza della Signoria with its beautiful “loggiato”. Choosing alternative streets you will encounter Piazzale degli Uffizi, reach the Ponte Vecchio, the Pitti Palace, enter in Via Tornabuoni and cross Via Porta Rossa until Piazza della Repubblica.

2. The second route starts from Piazza della Repubblica to Via del Giglio arriving until Santa Maria Novella. When you are in Via del Giglio you can admire the famous Chapels of the Medici Family but also go toward the Central Market; finally, from Canto dé Nelli you will return to Piazza della Repubblica.

3. Beginning from Piazza della Repubblica to Piazza San Giovanni, this route permits you to reach Piazza San Marco, Piazza Santissima Annunziata but also Piazza del Duomo, one of the most beautiful square of Italy and Europe. From this point you can go on until the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore or return to Piazza della Repubblica.

4. The last route offers you the possibility to see one of the most beautiful square of the city, Piazza Santa Croce, from which you will reach Piazza della Signoria and then Piazza della Repubblica.
